Late in 2002 we set out to create a starting
system that would be fair to the racers, as well as thrilling
for racers and spectators alike. We had seen a couple of different
gate designs, but each left a bit to be desired in our minds.
Then we saw what Action R/C in Oklahoma City had come up with
and we knew right away that we had found an excellent gate
to model ours after. The fine folks from Action were kind
enough to send us some pictures of their gate which allowed
us to formulate the design for our gate more easily. Shortly
thereafter we had our very own "freewheel" starting
gate. There are several advantages to this design:
- All
cars start at the same time, similar to motocross. This
means that no one gets a jump on the field by starting early.
It also increases the excitement level greatly for all those
that are watching the race (including the drivers!!).

- The
wheels are off the ground. This allows the drivers to keep
their motors cleaned out while waiting for the start, virtually
eliminating the flameouts common when waiting on the start
of a race. This allows the races to run more efficiently.
It makes it easier on the racers and the race director.
There are no "false starts" from someone getting
over eager and creeping across the starting line.
- It's
"automatic." Since the gate drops with the pull
of a lever, there is no need to have a pit person holding
the cars. It can be very loud, smokey, and somewhat dangerous
when you've got 10 cars screaming wildly waiting on the
start with the pitmen holding them off the ground. This
gate eliminates that antiquated technique, saving wear and
tear on the pit persons.
- Did
we mention how cool it is to see 10-12 buggies screaming
off the line at once?!?!?!
